Privacy Policy
This policy describes how the Clearthought iOS app (“Clearthought,” “we,” “us”) handles information. Your journal content stays on your device; we do not provide accounts or our own cloud sync for that material. We do not embed third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs in the app (see Analytics and crash reporting below). It is intended to align with what you see in the app under Privacy & your data in Settings.
Who we are
Clearthought is a journaling app for structured reflection (including CBT-style thought records). Questions about this policy: support@clearthoughtapp.com.
On your device
Thought and dream entries stay in this app’s storage on your iPhone. They are not uploaded to Clearthought—we don’t provide accounts or cloud sync for your journal content.
Weekly check-ins (GAD-7 and PHQ-9) are a Clearthought Pro feature; when you use them, those scores stay on your device like the rest of your journal.
Free tier retention: If you are not subscribed to Clearthought Pro, thought and dream entries older than about one calendar month are removed automatically from your device. Subscribing to Pro keeps your full on-device history until you delete it.
Analytics and crash reporting
Clearthought does not embed third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs, and your journal content is not sent to us for analytics. If you use Apple’s settings to share analytics or crash data with developers, Apple may provide aggregated diagnostic information to us through their systems—that does not include your journal text.
Backups
Clearthought Pro can keep an encrypted on-device snapshot and lets you run “Back up now” to update it or save a backup file elsewhere (not shown in the Files app by default). If you turn on iCloud backup in Settings, an encrypted copy can also be stored in your Apple iCloud account—still not uploaded to Clearthought. Restoring replaces your current journal and may require Face ID when app lock is enabled. You can restore from the last on-device snapshot, from iCloud if you use it, or from a backup file you saved.
Exports
PDF exports from the app are not encrypted. The app may also offer a summary-oriented view for sharing with a therapist or other professional (not a dump of every thought record)—only when you choose that flow.
You may use exports to complement in-person care—only when you choose, and only with recipients and storage you trust.
Lock
Face ID (or device passcode, when applicable) is an extra gate on this device. It does not change how your data is stored at rest in a way that replaces system protections—it is an access control layer in the app.
Apple Health (Pro)
If you enable Apple Health sleep in Settings, Clearthought reads sleep analysis to show duration and schedule consistency in charts. That information is used on your device; we still do not run our own servers or accounts for your journal.
Care and crisis
Clearthought is meant to supplement professional mental health care (for example, practicing thought records between sessions), not to replace therapy, diagnosis, or treatment. The app is not a diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, contact a licensed professional or use crisis resources listed on our Contact page.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
